May 7th 2016. Flattery they say…

The “song” in my last post was featured on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon. I’ve mentioned before my love of late night talk shows, as well as my love of good impersonations (that Adele surprise on the BBC still cracks me up!). So for Silly Saturday I’d like to share a bit of behind the scenes impersonations starring Jimmy Fallon, back in the Late Night days before The Tonight Show. He’s a really talented, comedic musician. Hope you get a few laughs out of this! The Bruce Springsteen moment is my favourite! With love, light, and song… ~Melissa~

April 23rd 2016. Little latte humour!

It’s Saturday, so it’s time for a little something funny. Today’s song is inspired by a very kind gesture I received today. While running a rehearsal for my students for an upcoming local music festival, one of the lovely parents brought in lattes for me and our accompanist. Very sweet, very unnecessary, very unexpected. In honour of this cuteness, I’d like to share Kristin Chenoweth’s hilarious version of the equally hilarious song Taylor the Latte Boy, written by the inimitable Marcy Heisler and Zina Goldrich. Enjoy! With love, light, and song… ~Melissa~

April 9th 2016. Schaden what now?

Today’s Silly Saturday post was inspired by my favourite Periscope psychic, Melissa Mattern! Yesterday Melissa taught her followers about “schadenfreude”, the German word for experiencing joy thanks to someone else’s pain. Her usual goal is to spread the magic of meditation and mindfulness to the masses, and lead an open discussion on what it’s like to be a real working psychic. But, getting over things like schadenfreude are really good signs that you’re moving along on your spiritual journey! Personally, I’m good with this. But I was reminded of a hilarious musical called Avenue Q, written by Jeff Marx and Robert Lopez (before Lopez wrote the music for Frozen). Can you think of any other musicals with songs like It Sucks To Be Me and Everyone’s A Little Bit Racist? I thought not! So for an even deeper understanding of Schadenfreude, check out this clever number from the show! (It hurts a little to post this because I really am not one to laugh at other people’s troubles, but honestly the musical is genius!) With love, light, and song… ~Melissa~

March 26th 2016. The best prank!

“I could make you happy, make your dreams come true…” Well it’s already time for another Silly Saturday post! Where does the time go? Earlier this week I posted a beautiful new Adele song, When We Were Young. One of her earlier hits was a cover of Bob Dylan’s Make You Feel My Love. That’s not silly, though! To make it silly, you have to watch Adele impersonate herself and freak out a bunch of Adele impersonators! This makes me laugh, but it’s also extremely touching. Enjoy! With love, light, and song… ~Melissa~

March 19th 2016. “Geoff” and Ian!

For today’s Silly Saturday song post, it’s not so much the song that’s funny, it’s the video. I’ve watched this so many times, and it still makes me laugh! Breakout British star George Ezra’s video for Listen to the Man is interrupted by a special guest who stays and sings the whole time… none other than Sir Ian McKellen. Hope you have a giggle or two on this beautiful day! With love, light, and song… ~Melissa~

March 12th 2016. Happy, happy phantoms!

It’s time for Silly Saturday, which I totally made up…I think! After the heaviness of the week, here’s a preciously bouncy take on the afterlife by Tori Amos. Happy Phantom is song about freewheeling, fun-loving ghosthood, until you see your former beloved. Not only do I love listening to this song, it was one of the most fun songs to learn to play as a teenager, and it sure kept my upper register on alert! Woooohooooooo!!!

NB: this performance is from the Live at Montreux concert series in 1992.

March 5th 2016. Fun with “Friends”!

It’s time for something lighthearted, isn’t it? It is, so I’m starting Silly Saturday. My posts have been a little intense, even though they’re mostly Muppet-filled. Today’s song is a tribute to friends! Last night some great friends took me out for a birthday dinner and it was just delightful! So today I offer this song to my friends, your friends, and my favourite tv “friends” known as Chandler, Joey, Monica, Phoebe, Rachel, and Ross. The catchy theme song to the show was co-written in the early 90s by The Rembrandts and the show’s creators. It was completed and released as a pop single in 1995, much to the band’s chagrin. Below is a real YouTube find: all the intros to all the seasons, 1994-2004. If you make it all the way through and still enjoy the music after the tenth season, I’ll buy you a coffee at Central Perk! But for a nutbar fan like me, this is gold. So to all my friends, but especially the great ones I saw yesterday: “I’ll be there for you (cause you’re there for me too)”. With love, light, and song… ~Melissa~
